The Chair of Islamic Studies from University of Bayreuth invites to the lecture "WOMEN SCRIBES AND ISLAMIC EDUCATION IN KANO CITY, NIGERIA" to be delivered by our guest speaker Dr. Awwalu Hassan on Monday, 3 February between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. (S135, NWIII or online).
Dr. Hassan, a historian at Sa'adatu Rimi University of Education in Kano (Nigeria), will be visiting the Chair from 2 to 9 February, during which time he will speak on the subject of female Islamic scholars and their contribution to manuscript culture in Kano. Dr. Hassan holds a Ph.D. in Intellectual History of Islam from Usmanu Ɗan Fodiyo University in Sokoto, Nigeria, awarded in 2023. His thesis focused on the transmission and knowledge production within the recent manuscript culture in Kano (Nigeria) from 1913-2013. Since 2012, he has been employed as a lecturer in the Department of History at Sa'adatu Rimi University of Education Kano. His research focuses on Islamic intellectual and social history, although he has a particular interest in manuscript culture and Islamic education, as well as Sufism and devotional culture in northern Nigeria. His publications include:
